The Art Of Doing Nothing

I challenge you to stop, take a seat, put your feet up and do nothing.

See how long you last until your fingers start to fidget, your toes start tapping and your mind drives you crazy. How soon does your attention get pulled away into the abyss of things to do and the distraction of social media? You might notice that it doesn’t take much to feel restless and bored.

Why can we not stop, drop and undo the art of doing? Are we so conditioned to be constantly busy and distracted that we have forgotten how to rest when we need to, turn off the devices early and socialise with our loved ones or even to just go on a leisurely walk on the beach and not take a selfie. I am 100% guilty of this too, just check out my Instagram page!

As I reflect and draft up this post I am on a flight heading to Malaysia from Australia. During this time I had the intention of purely enjoy being offline, unplugged and do absolutely nothing for a full 8 hours! Bliss!. But so far it’s not happening. Why you may ask? Because I am restless, uncomfortable, cold, bored and all the other pre-conditionings of the mind and body when it comes to doing nothing.

My present solution is to distract myself from the current experience. I write, watch a few movies and give myself full permission to drift off, snooze and ride the thought waves of being in midair, continuing my journey of a nomadic yoga teacher. I make a mental list of things I am grateful for, go over my intentions for the coming cycle and reflect on my tarot reading I had a few days ago.

Yes, I know I am still “doing” something but not as much as I would be if I was on the ground, unconsciously going from one task to the next, keeping up with the notifications and emails coming in.

It is SO EASY to be busy! I challenge you to make it easy to do NOTHING! Be bored, BE still, BE in the moment watching your breath and BE in awe of the sun set without taking a photo. Give yourself permission to re-live moments without the distractions of outside influences and to just BE.

You’re right, everyone is guilty of filling every minute with some kind of activity mental or physical

Being aware of this, is the 1st step in BEING
