Do you hear yourself saying any of these words during your classes?
Let go, hold on, tighten, grab, push, pull, harden, deeper or make sure you keep up.
How do the following words make you feel or make your body respond?
When you’re ready, now we’re going too, quickly, lets go, move harder, move faster or you’ll do it eventually.
Words have power, they hold a specific vibrational frequency which constantly contributes to the current tone / bhav or feeling state of the present moment. Depending on the dynamics or theme of your class and teaching style this will depend on your choice of words, regardless of this the words you choose to teach or guide your students with will speak directly to the cells of the body and ultimately the nervous system.
The language we use influences our students’ embodiment journey from the moment we greet them to the moment we say goodbye. It also leaves a residue within their energy field which can influence their entire day.
Positive, encouraging and supportive words invite in a positive and joyous state of being while negative, harsh and disempowering words do the opposite. Think about the words of your favourite song or that poem you keep coming back to, each sequence of words come together to create a verbal experience which leaves a lasting impression. As teachers of embodiment we never know any-bodies whole story, hence the importance of positive somatically aware words.
Becoming fluent in the poetry of the body or Somatic languaging means becoming super conscious of the words you’re using. It’s easy for us teachers to use the same words, same phrases and same instructional queues when teaching. Some words we use are on point while others are just fillers or added fluff that sound poetic and beautiful but don’t actually have a purpose or mean anything in particular or even relevant to what’s happening.
Somatic languaging speaks directly to the cells, the heart and the subtle body, it encompasses the mind-body duality, engaging the senses and overall perception of the entire experience. It’s all about self enquiry, the invitation to be curious and descriptive while staying close or translating what’s happening in and around the body.
If this speaks to you I’ve created a 2.5 hour Somatic Languaging workshop where you’ll learn:
* What Somatic languaging is.
* How to include it in your classes.
* Extra techniques to work with while continually refining your own embodied poetry.
Full details can be found here.
Suitable for yoga teachers, dance instructors, personal trainers and coaches!
I look forward to welcoming you 🙂
PS: Here’s a Yoga and Movement practice incorporating Somatic languaging I filmed while in Ibiza for you to enjoy!
